Historical Artistic Influences of Today

During the Egyptian era the amount of fabric grew with the level of social status. The same goes for the amount and quality of jewelry worn. This necklace can be found at Bergdorf Goodman. Wearing the piece today definitely represents high class.

During the Byzantine era, pixilated mosaics were created to decorate churches and palaces. Elie Saab’s fall 2009 design resembles the artistic style with the miniscule pattern.

Givenchy’s spring 2009 gothic inspired jacket resembles the pointed towers of gothic architecture. The juxtaposition of the fitted jacket with the movement in the skirt translates from the hard stone to the fragile glass in the cathedrals.

Softly draped gowns were the style of the Renaissance era. Parts of flesh were shown off to compliment the anatomy. Jamie Lynn Sigler wears a femininely draped gown in a luxurious gold hue by Donna Karan in September 2009 that accents the shoulders and back. The harmonized color and texture resemble the styles of the Renaissance.

"Extreme” was the style during the Baroque era because of religious and political struggles. Art represented dramatic effects of light and shadow. Here, Rei Kawakubo designs for Comme des Garcons with a piece that theatrically accentuates the shoulders and thighs.

Art in the romantic era used nature to express sentiments in the 1820’s and to move away from government enlightenment. Roberto Cavalli symbolizes the era with his spring 2008 RTW gown with its high waist and ballooning effect. The design radiates the mood and feeling of the romantic era with the natural skin tone color block and soft flower detail.
